shug

Shug as a character seemed outgoing and didnt care what people thought. but now she seems confused, like she said she loves mr. but she doesnt want him as a husband and she just sits around the house all the time and stays a long time, it also doesnt seem like she loves Grady, so why marry him?

I really think it is as simple as at some point in a persons life they reach that time when they simply want some companionship. Shug wanted someone to be comfortable with. Mr. couldn't be this person because he was so in love with Shug. Also Mr. was accustomed to controlling his women and the people in his life. Shug is not a woman who can be controlled.

Grady seems to be someone Shug can walk all over, but he wouldn't have it from anyone else. He's strong but not too strong to where Shug can't control him. The way Shug feels about sex must mean that he can't be that bad in bed. Seems like better reasons than the ones for Ceile and Mr.____'s marriage.

I agree with both of the previous posts to some degree. Shug loves Mr., however she was in love with the "old" Mr. that she used to know. She no longer could connect with him like she was able to do before. Its also probably true that Shug liked to have the upper hand and have a man that wouldn't talk back to her and yet still fulfilled her needs sexually.

I think Shug is confused about what she wants in life. She's had a relationship with Albert, Grady and Celie. I think she now knows that being with Celie is the best decision she has made. I don't think her and Grady will last. It seems to me that relationships/marriages are easy to get out of in this novel.

Shug is a free spirited individual. her occupation as a performer gives her that edge in respects to being wordly and a little out there. it seems that she has a certain idea of love. that it is about friendship and understanding. Her love for MR__ is from her earlier idea of him and he has changed quite a bit, she as well. Grady is ideal in that he is compliant to her needs and wants. but deep down i still think Shug is looking for something more, better things.

I think that Shug used to love Mr. but sort of outgrew it. She loved the old Mr. and doesn't love what he has become. She also wants someone that she can be in control of and that's obviously not Mr. She can walk all over Grady and he just takes it because he's kind of like the trophy husband. Shug buys him anything he wants and he doesn't have to do anything for it.

I think that Mr___ was SHug's first love and she will always love him a little. However Shug seems to love the old Mr____ not the new cruel one. SO i think she comes back hoping that maybe he has changed for the better.

Shug wants to be in control of the relationship which is the opposite of what MR. would be. Grady can satify her needs and seems like the best fit.

I agree with a little bit of everyone's perspective on this question. I think that Shug is still, and always will be, in love with the old Mr_. Shug is a independent, powerful woman who doesnt like to be walked all over which is why I think she is with Grady right now. She probably thinks she wont be able to find someone that suits her better than he does at this very moment. Grady is strong, but not pushy, and he fulfills Shug's sexual needs. It more than likely will not last, but at this moment Shug seems okay with that.

I personally don't think she loves Grady. I do think she loved Mr.. though. She loved him as the person he used to be when she was with him but she hates the person he has become and can't love him now because of the things he does and the way he has become. Shug sure has began to care a lot about Celie though and what happens to her and what could happen.

I think that Shug Avery married Grady to make Albert jealous. In other words it was probably a test to see if Albert loved Shug Avery anymore or not.
